The art brief
Help us to use art to create conversations and change behaviour. We want to prompt Kiwis to think about how we behave in positive ways to reflect the values that are important to us.
For 2020 – our art focus is on Aotearoa as a culturally diverse and inclusive nation with a spotlight on Chinese New Zealand communities.
The 2020 poster aims
We have made a start with a set of original art posters that promote this competition. You may have seen some around town or online. Your competition artworks will also need to reflect the 2020 poster aims.
The intent of these original artworks are to spark curiosity and conversation about:
our diverse cultural communities
the importance of taking a stand when we witness racist behaviour happening
different ways we might do so while staying safe.
For example, we could reduce any impression that the person behaving badly may have that their actions are supported by others around them by:
calling out and naming the bad behaviour in a non-confrontational way
expressing or offering support to the person being targeted such as asking - Are you ok?
expressing or acting in positive ways that reinforce our values as a culturally diverse and inclusive society
engaging others nearby to join in to express and reinforce these social values.
New artworks to further engage with the public
We seek your help to create new artworks to further promote the aims of the 2020 poster competition. The Chinese Kiwis and Responding to racism website pages are a starting point to find inspiration and help you get ideas for how you might approach your poster.
The judges will be looking for the following in your artwork:
Relevance to the competition theme
Originality of concept
Creativity
Technical art and design execution
Poster impact – the ‘wow’ factor that engages people.
